In 1998, Nick Gladdish decided that he had done all he could in the Plymouth music scene with his first few bands ‘NUMB’ & ‘Spacebaby’ (1995 - 1998), and went to University at Hull, (Scarborough campus) to study his music degree. There, he instantly teamed up with fellow musician and best friend, Lee Brown from Newcastle upon Tyne. Between the two of them, they began to write powerful heartfelt songs influenced by the likes of Pink Floyd, Coldplay, Mike Scott, Paul Weller, John Lennon, Tom Petty and Del Amitri. After a chance meeting with James Sayer (Breeze) in Scarborough, the duo had a rhythm section and began gigging around the North Yorkshire music scene as ‘Unplugged’.

‘One Big Chinese Whisper’ (2001) and the ‘Media Machine’ (2001) demo albums were the result of Unplugged’s early recordings - soon to be rebranded as Casualkai in 2002. Nick relocated to Newcastle to write and record with Lee once again - enter Jon & Joff to the Casualkai circus! The four piece wrote and recorded 2 x EPs and one album. They regularly performed on the Northeast circuit, performing festivals, tour supports between 2002 and 2010.
